Background
Two centuries ago Lower Kingcombe was a thriving hamlet on the banks of the river Hooke, with perhaps 80 inhabitants. By 1985 the population had shrunk to 3 and most of the buildings were ruins. However, as a result of the very conservative farming methods of the Wallbridge family, the 600 acre Lower Kingcombe estate had been preserved as if in a time warp, and after a tremendous fund-raising effort much of it was acquired at auction in 1987 by The Dorset Wildlife Trust and other individuals and bodies pledged to conserve it.
The outcome of the May 1987 auction was very fortunate and was hailed as a victory for the conservation movement. As a result of tremendous public support for a national appeal, the Dorset Wildlife Trust was successful in all its bids and purchased 300 acres as Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve; with further acquisitions since then, it now farms 430 acres. The Dorset Wildlife Trust is dedicated to managing the land sensitively as a traditional farm/nature reserve, open to the public at all times. Our neighbours at Sunnyside Farm have a 100 acre organic holding.

An environmental study centre in the heart of West Dorset. Three old buildings on the banks of the river Hooke in the hamlet of Lower Kingcombe were converted into The Kingcombe Centre which is now owned and run by a charitable trust, The Kingcombe Trust. The Centre is very fortunate to have access to the Dorset Wildlife Trust Kingcombe Meadows reserve, literally on our doorstep. |

The former threshing barn at the Centre provides a light and airy multi purpose space - it acts as a painting studio, field studies classroom, and a conference room. Our new conservatory is now in use and gives greater flexibility with our daily activities and catering provision. Beech Cottage, a ruin 300 metres up the road owned by the Leggett Trust, has been rebuilt and provides additional comfortable accommodation for eight guests. It also has a meeting room for about 20 people and a conservatory with wonderful views out over the fields and the river. The Centre is very fortunate to have access to the Dorset Wildlife Trust Kingcombe Meadows reserve, literally on our doorstep. Lower Kingcombe has emerged into the 21 st century and new life has been breathed into ‘the farm that time forgot’. We hope that you will be able to experience this atmosphere for yourself during 2008. |
