EuCAN - THE EUROPEAN CONSERVATION ACTION NETWORK

2007 saw the launch of EuCAN, an exciting new initiative set up by The Kingcombe Trust in partnership with the Dorset Branch of Butterfly Conservation, the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) in France and the Aggtelek National Park in Hungary. The project was awarded a Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning Grant to set up a programme of visits for UK conservation volunteers to work in France and Hungary between 2007 and 2009.
In 2008, we have received further funding to extend the project to include Poland and the Czech Republic between 2008 and 2010. We have established links with conservation organisations in all four countries to carry out practical management tasks and species monitoring working with local volunteers. We hope that ultimately there will be a two-way exchange between the UK and the rest of the EU.

The project so far has been a great success with two visits to central France and one to northeast Hungary. In 2009/10 we will be going to France, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic.

We are now recruiting volunteers for the first visit to the Czech Republic in August 2008.

Are you eligible for this programme?

If you are fit and prepared to do practical work for perhaps nine days in a fortnight, if you are over 18, not in fulltime education, but are in employment, retired or out of work, you are just the sort of person we are looking for!

Cost The placements are to be completely free, but we are asking for a deposit of £100 on booking as an expression of commitment. This will be returned to you after your final report and evaluation questionnaire have been received and the two days practical conservation tasks have been completed with a local group of your choice and the record sheets filled in. All accommodation (in shared rooms), meals and travel, health and personal insurance will be funded by the grant.

Preparation weekends Where it is practical, participants will be expected to attend one of the introductory 2-night ‘preparation’ weekends at The Kingcombe Centre. These will be free and will involve a day or a day and a half’s practical conservation work (or survey work in the summer), a chance to meet participants in previous visits, to learn about the culture, history, language and ecology of the areas to be visited, and generally to become familiar with the project. There will also be the opportunity for Lantra brushcutter training during the weekend.
